St Barts was discovered bay Cristobal Columbus, who baptized it in 1943 in the honnor of his brother Bartolomeo. The island was successively governed by Spain, France, Malta, and then by Sweden that made it tax-free and called the main town Gustavia in the honour of King Gustave III of Sweden but the same ones had then sold it to France who associated it with Guadalupe until July 15th 2007 when it became an Overseas Community (COM).

Economy

The economy is based on luxury tourism and because of its carriage free status, it attract high-class clients, mainly American. But happily, the island is not confronted to a mass-tourism problem, which has been controlled by privileging the island’s respect and its inhabitants.
